Nan or Muang Nan is an ancient town of the Lanna-Thai period founded in 1282 A.D. Governed by
64 different rulers it remained an almost independent kingdom until 1931. Nan province covers an area of 11,472,076 square
kilometers with a population of 518,688. It is administratively divided into 14 Amphoes (Districts) and 1 King Amphoes (Sub
Districts) : Amphoe Muang, Wiang Sa, Pua, Chiang Klang, Tha Wang Pha, Thung Chang, Mae Charim, Ban Luang, Na Noi, Na Muen,
Santisuk, Bo Klua, Chalem Phrakiat, Song Khaeo and King Amphoe Phu Phiang. The minicipality is located 668 kilometers from
Bangkok.
Being more than 700 years old Nan town and province has
many
beautiful main temple such as Wat Prathat Chae Haeng,
Wat Phu Min and Wat Chang Kom, also interesting cultural
and
historical site. Nan National Museum is one of the best in Thailand.
Nan province is very mountainous and sparsely
populated by Yao, Htin, Hmong, Thai-Lue and the primitive nomadic Mabri
or Phi Tong Luang tribe is still migrating around
in few remote forest areas.
The many natural attraction includes the Doi Phu Ka National Park with waterfalls, caves,
spectacular views. Other interesting site are the Mae Charim National Park with wonderfully scenery of tropical forest and
the river of Lam Nam Wa which is situated among the mixed forest and most outstanding characteristics of variety of rapids.
And Sri Nan National Park within Sao Din is bizarre earth pillars at Na Noi district.
